I think...

Sugar has scratches!!! I think. Horizontal lines of crusty dirt between her fetlock joint and coronary band on the backs of her legs? ALL FOUR legs??I tried to bush them, but she didn't like that very much. I was out on Sunday, and she was normal. I was out last night, and she has these. I've posted on COTH. I've researched on COTH. Sugar has very sensitive skin. So I'm going to wash her with antifungal shampoo, concentrate on those areas, and get them cleaned up. Then I read that I shoudl put Desitin or Zinc Oxide on the lines to keep them clean and moisture free. Someone also said I could use Tomorrow, the stuff we use for Rally's thrush. It's been so wet here. I wish our barn was drier.

  1. Gosh, I think Shannon over at It's Quarters for Me or Kate at A Year with Horses have experience in this area. Poor Sugar. Hope she finds relief soon!

  3. I hope you can see comments on older posts- Gwen got scratches bad last year. So bad her legs swelled up :(

The vet had me scrubbing her legs with Nolvasan for weeks when the average temp was 18 degrees. That sucked and it didn't work. What did finally work was dusting the scratches with No Thrush. I'd puff it into my hand and rub it around her fetlocks. Cleared it up within a week.

Kate would recommend animalintex, I've heard that works well but since mine live outside 24/7 I didn't want to wrap her with anything.

I've heard some people say that scratches is sometimes a by-product of horses not getting enough copper and zinc in their diets. I don't really know if that's true or not.
